Wentworth Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Design (SoAD) Lecture Series. October 21, 2026. Boston, USA. Lecture examining the distinctions and complementarities between applied scholarship and applied research in design. Using the Territorial Planning Framework (BOT) for Gran Parque Carapé in Uruguay as a case study, the presentation traced the methodology of Ecosystemic Democracy across successive phases of territorial analysis, participatory engagement, ecological diplomacy, and strategic planning. The lecture distinguished applied scholarship, which integrates disciplinary knowledge into transformative design practice, from applied research, which develops specific questions, methods, and contributions to knowledge. Three peer-reviewed research contributions emerging from the broader Carapé scholarship illustrated this relationship: Ecological Diplomacy and Ecosystemic Democracy (V Congreso Latinoamericano de Teoría Social, 2025), The Listening Deck: Ecological Diplomacy and Participatory Planning in Carapé (ACSA Annual Meeting, 2026), and From Participation to Partnership: Expanding the Democratic Community Through Ecosystemic Dialogues (EDRA57, 2026). Together, these works demonstrated how applied scholarship and applied research can operate as distinct yet mutually reinforcing forms of knowledge production.
